DALnet Support Status Update
We’re making a change to how Eggy BNC handles DALnet going forward.
To be absolutely clear:
We are not disconnecting existing users from DALnet, and we are not preventing users from connecting to DALnet.
If you currently use DALnet through Eggy BNC, nothing is being removed from your account as a result of this decision.
What is changing is the level of administrative support we are prepared to provide for DALnet.
Following a recent interaction with DALnet IRC operating staff, we found the manner in which we were spoken to unnecessarily abrupt and dismissive.
We approached the matter civilly and in good faith while looking into connection limits and ensuring Eggy BNC remained compliant. Unfortunately, we do not feel the response we received justified spending further time pursuing formal registration, increased connection allowances or other special arrangements with DALnet.
What is changing?
Eggy Network will no longer be applying to DALnet for connection-limit increases or pursuing special arrangements for Eggy BNC.
Existing DALnet users can continue using the network normally for as long as DALnet permits those connections.
We will also continue taking reasonable steps on our own infrastructure to prevent abuse and keep Eggy BNC operating responsibly.
What happens if DALnet blocks Eggy BNC?
If DALnet subsequently limits or bans Eggy BNC because of the number of connections originating from our service, we will not consider investigating, appealing or negotiating that restriction to be in Eggy Network’s best interests.
In that situation, DALnet availability through Eggy BNC may simply cease.
We appreciate that some of our users have longstanding DALnet accounts and registered nicknames, and some paying members actively use the network.
That is precisely why we are not proactively removing DALnet access.
What this means for users
• Existing DALnet connections are not being removed.
• Users are not currently being prevented from connecting to DALnet.
• Eggy Network will no longer request higher DALnet connection limits.
• We will not pursue special registration or arrangements with DALnet.
• We will continue enforcing reasonable anti-abuse controls on Eggy BNC.
• If DALnet blocks or restricts Eggy BNC in future, we may choose not to appeal, investigate or attempt to have the restriction removed.
• Other IRC networks available through Eggy BNC are unaffected.
In short
This is not a DALnet ban from Eggy Network.
It is simply a withdrawal of official administrative support and advocacy for DALnet connectivity.
Users who currently rely on DALnet can continue doing so while the network remains accessible through Eggy BNC.
We have our own service and customers to support, and we believe our time is better spent improving Eggy BNC rather than pursuing arrangements with a network where we do not feel that effort is worthwhile.
